While most of her peers hid out in the crypt — not exactly a safe move , it turns out — Lyanna, Lady of Bear Island, bravely fought against the Night King and his army as they set upon Winterfell. With her dying breath, the young head of House Mormont stabbed the giant in the eye and killed him — like, for good this time.

It was a move replicated later in the episode by another teenage girl from the North, Arya Stark, who slayed the Night King and saved all of humanity in the process. I was pretty excited. I was definitely surprised. So yes, thank you to all the fans for getting behind her and supporting Lyanna and House Mormont. Basically, I was in this massive claw machine; it was on green screen.

I was sitting on this bicycle-seat thing and I was strapped in and I got raised in quite high in the air and this machine did this series of moves — like a simulation, which made it seem like I was being shaken by a giant.

It was surreal. There was lots of fake blood mixed into that, which was fun. I probably did about a week altogether, but that was enough. It was tough. It was very cold. It made it feel very real.

If you listen, you can hear the bones crushing, which is a bit gross. But I think she was already battered before that because obviously he swiped her out the way with his hand. I was in a harness for that and I got pulled sideways onto a crash mat. She was already beaten up. So she was already pretty bashed up, so I think that was the final straw. So I think she did die getting crushed. I like to imagine she took her last breath just after she stabbed him.

I was talking to [director] Miguel [Sapochnik]. We talked about whether Lyanna would be scared or show her more vulnerable, childlike side. He gave me a great bit of direction. It gave me a clear picture in her head in how to play the death, just with absolute confidence and sheer determination. That was empowering. I hope people take from it to keep going and persist in the battle because she could have easily stayed on the floor and just died.

She has a sheer courage and confidence. Also Arya, she could have easily retreated or could have gone to hide in the crypt, but she went out and fought as well.

Just the fact that everybody is as good as each other. Some people may be more physically fitter or stronger than others, when it comes to a battle everyone can fight.

I like that one a lot. I think it would be cool if Arya did. She killed the Night King, so I think she deserves it. How likely that is to happen? I went to bed and my mum woke me up at five to 2 to watch it. I thought we should watch it when it first came out.

Lyanna Mormont Stood Taller Than Giants

Tonight's episode of Game of Thrones was always going to be a heartbreaker. With last episode seeming to bring so many characters' arcs to an end, it was basically anyone's guess about who would be saying goodbye in the Battle of Winterfell. The Night King and his giant army of wights and White Walkers wanted nothing less than the destruction of Westeros and its people, and we said goodbye to many a favorite, including one of the Night's Watch's last men, Dolorous Edd, and the Lord of Light's fave, Beric Dondarrion. But one of the deaths that hurt the most was Lyanna Mormont's. A favorite since we first heard of her in season 5, when she affirmed her house's allegiance to the King in the North, Lyanna played by Bella Ramsey has stolen the scene in every one of her appearances. Her final living breath was no different. In the brutal battle, she was gripped by a giant wight, who picked her up and crushed her small body to death. But, true to heroic form, she took advantage of her closeness to the creature and stabbed it in the eye, killing it.

She was named after Lyanna Stark , who died years before she was born. When Maege left to fight in the War of the Five Kings , Lyanna ruled Bear Island in her mother's stead, eventually taking Maege's place upon her death in combat. House Mormont's domains are poor on their heavily forested island, vulnerable to attack from the sea, meaning that the Mormonts have had to develop a strong tradition of warrior women to defend their homes from surprise raids. Maege Mormont personally led and fought beside the Mormont contingent in Robb Stark's army. Maege's daughter Lyanna was similarly raised, expecting to be a ruler and commander - unlike many other Houses, even in the North, that usually do not allow women to rule. Along with the other Stark vassals of the North, House Mormont's army was slaughtered at the Red Wedding , leaving their home garrison with only sixty two remaining warriors - led by a ten year old Lyanna, because most of their people of fighting age had been killed.
